McCorriston: Pilgrimage and Household in the Ancient Near East. pb

!
  • Pilgrimage and Household in the Ancient Near East.
  • McCorriston, Joy
  • Paperback, 306 pages, 55 b/w illus. 6 maps 4 tables, 228 x 152 mm. In this book, Joy McCorriston examines the continuity of traditions over millennia in the Near East. Tracing the phenomenon of pilgrimage in pre-Islamic Arabia up through the development of the Hajj, she defines its essential characteristics and emphasizes the critical role that pilgrimage plays in enabling and developing socioeconomic transactions. Indeed, the social identities constructed through pilgrimage are key to understanding the long-term endurance of the phenomenon. In the second part of the book, McCorriston turns to the household, using cases of ancient households in Mesopotamian societies, both in the private and public spheres. Her conclusions tie together broader theoretical implications generated by the study of the two phenomena and offer a new paradigm for archaeological study, which has traditionally focused on transitions to the exclusion of continuity of traditions.

  • Carthage Must be Destroyed: The Rise and Fall of an Ancient Civilization
  • Richard Miles 2011
  • Paperback, 544 pages, col. Illustrations, maps, 198 x 129 mm
  • The story of Carthage is one of the great epics of the Ancient World. And yet, thanks to the ruthlessness and brutality of the Roman destruction of the city under Scipio in 146 BC, we know relatively little about the city: its foundation, its expansion, its way of life, its literature and gods. Carthage has to all intents and purposes been driven to the margins of history. This is a tale of battles and empire-building, of bitter rivalry and destruction - and a great civilisation whose role in shaping European culture and history has, until now, been largely ignored.

  • The Bible in the British Museum: Interpreting the Evidence
  • T. C. Mitchell 2004 Second Edition
  • Paperback, 136 pages, 80 illustrations, 246 x 189 mm
  • The British Museum's collections include numerous inscribed objects, scripts and pictorial reliefs which provide such evidence. There is, for example, a Babylonian clay tablet which records Nebuchadnezzar's siege of Jerusalem in 597 BC, as narrated in the book of Jeremiah. For this book the author has selected over seventy such 'documents', mainly from Western Asia, with some examples included from Greece, Egypt and Asia Minor, dating from the period of the Patriarchs to the New Testament times, c. 2000 BC to c. AD 100. He transliterates and translates the ancient texts, which include Cuneiform, Aramaic and Hebrew, and discusses the contribution they make to our knowledge of the culture and history of biblical times. Each object is illustrated in black and white.

  • Annick Payne 2015. Pb. XVIII, 233 Seiten - 57 Abb., 2 Schemata, 22 Tabellen - 43 Abb. - 24,0 x 17,0 cm
